VL53L7CXTime-of-Flight (ToF) 8x8 multizone ranging sensor with 90 degrees FoV | Distance Measuring | 1 | Active | Specially designed for applications requiring an ultrawide FoV, the VL53L7CX Time-of-Flight sensor offers a 90° diagonal FoV. Based on ST's FlightSense technology, the VL53L7CX incorporates an efficient metasurface lens (DOE) placed on the laser emitter enabling the projection of a 60° x 60° square FoV onto the scene.
Its multizone capability provides a matrix of 8x8 zones (64 zones) and can work at fast speeds (60 Hz) up to 350 cm.
Thanks to the autonomous mode with programmable distance threshold combined to the ultrawide FoV, the VL53L7CX is perfect for any application requiring low-power user detection. ST's patented algorithms and innovative module construction allow the VL53L7CX to detect, in each zone, multiple objects within the FoV with depth understanding. ST histogram algorithms ensure cover glass crosstalk immunity beyond 60 cm.
Derived from the VL53L5CX, the pinouts and drivers of both sensors are compatible, which ensures a simple migration from one sensor to the other.
Like all Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors based on ST's FlightSense technology, the VL53L7CX records, in each zone, an absolute distance regardless of the target color and reflectance.
Housed in a miniature reflowable package that integrates a SPAD array, the VL53L7CX achieves the best ranging performance in various ambient lighting conditions, and for a wide range of cover glass materials.
All of ST's ToF sensors integrate a VCSEL that emits a fully invisible 940 nm IR light, which is totally safe for the eyes (Class 1 certification).
The VL53L7CX is the perfect sensor for any application requiring ultrawide FoV like robotics, smart speakers, video projectors, content management. The combination of the multizone capability and the 90° FoV can enhance new use-cases like gesture recognition, SLAM for robotics, and low power system activation for smart building. |

VL53L8CHArtificial intelligence enabler, high performance 8x8 multizone Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor | Sensors, Transducers | 1 | Active | The VL53L8CX is the perfect Time-of-Flight sensor enabling AI applications, with enhanced performance under ambient light with a wide 65° diagonal FoV. The compact and normalized histogram (CNH) innovative data output is specially designed for artificial intelligence (AI) applications requiring multizone raw data from a high performance multizone ToF sensor.
The IR signal measured in each zone is sent as raw data to the host through each bin of the histogram. Highly configurable, the user can program the resolution of the VL53L8CX up to 64 zones (8x8 zones), modify the histogram resolution up to 128 bins, and define the bin width. All this CNH data is transmitted to the host through I²C or SPI, up to 30 Hz, in addition to the standard processed data of the ToF sensor (ranging distance, signal level, reflectance etc.).
The CNH data transform STMicroelectronics' Time-of-Flight ranging sensor into a versatile optical sensor, which can enable endless AI-based applications. This CNH raw data sent to the host, on top of the standard ranging data, opens the door to many new applications beyond simple distance measurements. From solid material (carpet, wood, glass, mirror...) to gas or liquid (water, oil, chemical...), it becomes possible to detect the location and the size of a cup in a coffee machine or beverage dispenser, to sense the floor material for robotics, and develop advanced shape, motion, or hand posture recognition.
The VL53L8CX integrates a powerful new generation VCSEL, and two advanced metasurface lenses. The integrated VCSEL emits fully invisible 940 nm IR light, which is Class 1 certified and safe for the eyes. |
VL53L8CXLow-power high-performance 8x8 multizone Time-of-Flight sensor (ToF) | Specialized Sensors | 1 | Active | The VL53L8CX is an 8x8 multizone, ToF ranging sensor, which enhances performance under ambient light with a reduced power consumption. Based on STMicroelectronics' FlightSense technology, the sensor is designed to provide accurate ranging up to 400 cm with a 65° diagonal FoV.
The VL53L8CX integrates a powerful new generation VCSEL, and two advanced metasurface lenses. The hardware is housed in an innovative "all in one" module. This enables a wider variety of high-performance usecases, such as low-power system activation, gesture recognition, SLAM for robotics, liquid level monitoring, and many more.
Thanks to STMicroelectronics' patented algorithms, the VL53L8CX can detect and track multiple targets within the FoV, with a 64-zone depth measurement. The STMicroelectronics' histograms ensure a cover glass crosstalk immunity above 60 cm.
Like all ToF sensors based on STMicroelectronics' FlightSense technology, the VL53L8CX measures an absolute distance regardless of the target color and reflectance.
The VL53L8CX supports SPI and I²C interfaces for high frequency frame rates and short-boot times.
The VCSEL of the VL53L8CX emits fully invisible 940 nm IR light. Such VCSEL has a Class 1 certification that is safe for the eyes. Scene browsing and multizone detection are possible with the VL53L8CX. This is due to a software customizable detection array. It detects human presence quickly and at low-power. Such detection is known as a minidepth map. |

| Evaluation Boards | 1 | Active | The VL6180 breakout boards are hardware add-ons for the X-NUCLEO-6180A1 expansion board. Up to three breakout boards can be connected to the X-NUCLEO-6180A1 expansion board, enabling multi sensor applications. Thanks to its 2.8 V regulator, the VL6180 breakout board can be used in any application with a 3.3 to 10 V supply.
The part supporting the VL6180 module, 2.54 mm connector and output regulator is scored, so that developers can break off the mini PCB for use in a 2.8 V supply application using flying leads. This makes it easier to integrate into development and evaluation devices due to its small form factor. |
VL6180XTime-of-Flight (ToF) proximity sensor and ambient light sensing (ALS) module | Optical Sensors | 1 | Obsolete | The VL6180X is the latest product based on ST’s patented FlightSense™technology. This is a ground-breaking technology allowing absolute distance to be measured independent of target reflectance. Instead of estimating the distance by measuring the amount of light reflected back from the object (which is significantly influenced by color and surface), the VL6180X precisely measures the time the light takes to travel to the nearest object and reflect back to the sensor (Time-of-Flight).
Combining an IR emitter, a range sensor and an ambient light sensor in a three-in-one ready-to-use reflowable package, the VL6180X is easy to integrate and saves the end-product maker long and costly optical and mechanical design optimizations.
The module is designed for low power operation. Ranging and ALS measurements can be automatically performed at user defined intervals. Multiple threshold and interrupt schemes are supported to minimize host operations.
Host control and result reading is performed using an I2C interface. Optional additional functions, such as measurement ready and threshold interrupts, are provided by two programmable GPIO pins. |
