A Brief History of Component Catalogs

The electronic component catalog has been around since the 1940s. It started as a thick, physical magazine shipped to engineering firms as a reference book of orderable parts. When catalogs moved online, not much changed: they remained long lists of parts, hosted mainly by distributors, just slightly easier to filter through.

Where does Zenode’s data come from?

We merge information from multiple distributors and dozens of manufacturers. That means not just part listings, but also official manufacturer documentation like datasheets, application notes, certifications, and change notices.

How is Zenode different from other catalogs?

Traditional catalogs were built for purchasing. Zenode is built for designing. We focus on complete technical context, with normalized specs, deduplicated parts, and a wide range of supporting documents.

Does Zenode have pricing and availability?

Yes — we include pricing data today. Availability coverage is more limited, and we’re actively working with partners to improve it. Each part page also links out to distributor sites for the most current commercial details.

What’s the end goal of Zenode’s catalog?

To become the most comprehensive and accurate resource for electronic component discovery. Our mission is to help engineers design faster and with more confidence — and we’re expanding our coverage every month.
